THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

10 July 2022

Dad joke:

My wife said she’s leaving me because of my obsession with tennis – and I’m too old.

I said: “I’m only 40 love.”

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone the beginning of this week brought on some rollercoaster weather conditions but by working hard some great fish came across the gunnels.

The trick this week was to find some good areas that were protected from the wind and also provided the spots where the bait schools were concentrated. As usual for this year with the huge amount of rainfall the bait is holding where the dirty water meets the clearer water from the run in tides.

Well done to you Jack coming out fishing in my boat and dealing with life in a wheelchair you and your family are inspirational
It was freezing cold on Monday but with some good old fashioned trolling Lyle caught some nice flatties.
5 year old Owen with his first ever fish well done and of course a lure being a pontoon crackjack lure

Trolling a combination of shallow and deep running minnows being the ever reliable Pontoon 21 crackjacks and Slam lures provided the most consistent results. The fish caught were a heap of flatties, bream and even the little school jewies that are in the biggest numbers I have ever seen in the river.

It is great to see the sun shining once again and look forward to talking to you all next week.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

A funny old week I found with times of falling air pressure during the day coinciding with slower bite periods. Whatever happens we always find a way to grind out a result for our customers, and we caught squid, flathead, flounder, winter whiting, sand whiting, tailor, bream, trevally.

65cm Giant Trevally on Samaki vibe in the broadwater
Two nice squid taken on Ecogear Dartmax jigs

Best lures were Samaki Vibelicious forktail 70mm in uv squid colour, Ecogear ZX40 in 440 colour with Sax scent uv prawn added, and best squid jigs were Ecogear Dartmax 3.0 in colours D201CG in cloudy conditions, D08G and D35CS in clear sky, and Daiwa Emeraldas nude 2.5 and 3.0 in brown Ebi colour. I spray a tiny bit of Egimax scent onto the hook end of jigs.

Lovely feed from the broadwater
Mick from Sydney caught this great arrow

Best areas for squid and fish were Southport, Labrador, Runaway Bay.

We have full moon this coming Thursday so we should see some great action.

Tuesday looks the best day weather wise, with plenty of cold Southerly direction in the wind this week. Great for squid fishing, not great for other fishing apart from tailor, but if they’re all hungry they’ll feed. I’ll be chasing arrow squid on vibes and jigs in 3-6m depth, tailor on surface lures, and flathead on soft plastics.

Squid season is here!

Finally some cooler weather has arrived! The water temperature has dropped to 24 degrees in Nerang river and the Southern broadwater and soon we will see a big influx of flathead and flounder. There has already been lots of good size tailor getting caught which is hopefully a good sign for a great season ahead.
