THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

13 August 2023

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone I spent this week on the water exploring a couple of new spots in the river that I have always wondered about.

These areas are ridge lines that run at different angles across the middle of the river that I have driven over for many years in favour of my reliable spots. The good news is that they fished very well and unless you take your time and sound around them you would drive over them just like I have for over 30 years.

My nephew Spencer was stoked to catch a jewie on one of his Bottom Basher vibes

With a combination of trolling Hurricane Slam minnows and drift jigging with Samaki Vibelicious lures we caught a heap of flatties of varying sizes. The other species we caught were bream, whiting, tailor, flounder and a couple of small school jewies.

Pauly Cameron from New Age Caravans on the Gold Coast was stoked to fish some new grounds.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Hi everyone, it took a lot of persistence this week to find fish for my charter guests. We did catch some good flathead, sand whiting, arrow squid, and flounder on Ecogear ZX, MMD prawn vibes, Zman 3 inch Minnowz, Pontoon 21 Crackjackz, and   Ecogear Dartmax squid jigs.

Quality flathead on lures

There were still some nice quality fish around, just not that easy to catch during the neap tides. This week should see better action around the new moon and bigger coefficient. The water is amazingly clear so natural colour lures work best.

Yabbies will also catch huge numbers of fish, the morning high tides are small so it’s not too hard to pump them.

Some nice hauls this week

The arrow squid are not thick numbers but there are good size ones around. With the water temp already rising to around 20 degrees I don’t we’ll see a massive influx of squid again this season like we saw in June and July.

I have only a couple of dates still available in August and already had lots of bookings for September. The warmer water will suit flathead fishing so I’ll be chasing them heaps in shallow water with soft plastics. It’s so much fun on light tackle and we keep a few for a feed and release the bigger ones.
