GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint

13 March 2026

The recent rain has continued to give the estuaries a nice flush and the fishing has stayed active without being on fire. Water in parts of the Nerang River and Broadwater has a bit of colour to it which is often a good sign for feeding fish.

Sand whiting have been the standout again with good numbers being caught around Southport, Crab Island and the yabby flats. Fresh pumped yabbies and beach worms are doing the damage with some quality fish mixed in. Further up river from Bundall there has been loads of pest ponyfish and schools of tarwhine and bream, I’ll wait for them to move on before trying there again.

School size flathead have been turning up along the drop offs and channel edges throughout the Broadwater. Vibes such as Samaki Vibelicious and Ecogear ZX40s have been working well.

There are also lots of winter whiting and flounder showing up on the deeper flats which is a good sign as we move towards the cooler months.

This coming week we are leading into the new moon which usually fires the fishing up another notch. With a bit more rain forecast it should keep the system nice and productive. I unfortunately broke a finger while landscaping at home this week and missed the last few days of fishing. I will have to take a week off and reschedule some bookings.

In coming months we can expect more flathead to come on, as well as squid and many more fish species, as well as the usual big sand whiting which continue all year around here at the Gold Coast.
