14 August 2024 estuary fishing report

GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING NEWS

Some good rain this week which will really fire up the fishing, especially for flathead and whiting. Up until this morning (Wednesday 14 August) Tweed river has received 92mm at North Murwillumbah, Nerang river around 30mm, Hinze dam 52mm and capacity is currently 96.5%.

Up to 80mm of rain is expected on the Gold Coast and Northern NSW today. By Thursday the rain will clear to light showers as the coastal low tracks South, and it’ll be sunny by the weekend with light winds, perfect for the airshow and fishing.

There is the possibility of further rain events in late August and early September which will help the flathead fishing on the Gold Coast and Tweed even more.

In the last week we have been catching flathead, whiting, squid, flounder, and there is plague numbers of bream in Nerang river around Bundall at the moment. At Tweed there are flathead, school jew, and bream on offer.

This coming week we have the lead up to the full moon on 20 August, and it’s also the time of year when the bigger tides switch to daytime instead of night. You know what they say, more run more fun! I’ll be going hard chasing flathead on soft plastics, soft vibes, prawn blades, and hardbodies. There’s a good chance of tailor too on the bigger tides, keep an eye out for birds diving on baitfish, and the tailor make a decent sized splash too when they bust up. Cast 30-50 gram metals and medium to fast retrieve should see you hooked up to these mad and hard fighting fish.

AFTA, the annual tackle show is on this week at the Gold Coast convention centre with the public day on Saturday. It’s a great chance to see all the hottest new tackle releases coming up in Australia. My tip is don’t miss the Samaki, Tackle Tactics, Rapala, MMD Fishing, and My Lure Box.

Also the huge 30th edition of the Gold Coast flathead classic is on next month, running from 24-27 September. In the last few years we have finished 2nd and 4th in two person teams at the flathead classic. If you want some pointers book a charter before then. If you’ve never fished the classic before this is a good year to do so as it’s a big one! There are big prizes to be won in random draws and a great atmosphere at the event site every night.
