THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

16 December 2022

Dad joke:

I told my wife I wanted to be cremated.

She made an appointment for Tuesday.

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone the fishing on the Tweed this week was a little bit slower than usual due to the very small tides. But as usual we worked hard and stayed focused on fishing the deep holes and the bait schools that were holding up close to the bottom.

Scotty with one of the nice flatties he caught on the day

Dropping down and jigging the Ecogear zx 40 lures as always got the job done with some flatties, bream, whiting and small school jew. The tides are looking good for next week so I am excited to do some good fishing leading into Xmas.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Some nice flathead this week on soft plastics, and the tailor turned up in big numbers. They have been voraciously smashing the huge schools of whitebait.

A good broadwater haul
The tailor are going crazy

They will hit just about any lure but we have been using Zman 3 inch minnowz rigged on 3/8 oz 3/0 TT jigheads. These plastics stand up well to tailor bites. Opening Night and Beer Run are ideal colours for matching the bait fish. The tailor have been good size and many legal. They are top fun on light tackle and I love eating them fresh, always have. Just a simple fillet fried in the pan in olive oil then a sprinkle of salt, delicious.

Aaron caught this flattie on a Zman

Water temp in the broadwater is slowly rising to 26 degrees now, a bit cooler on the run in. This is still to the flathead’s liking which is why there are still lots to be caught in the shallows. My favourite soft plastics for them have been Zman ST Grubz in Houdini and Opening night colours, Zman Prawnz in Beer Run, Houdini, and Laguna Shrimp, and 6th Sense Divine swimbaits which come in a range of really good looking bait fish colours.

A great day on the flatties and tailor using Zman plastics

There are also some trevally and heaps of bream on the flats, which do grab the small plastics, and the whiting are scattered around. Biggest for the week on charter was 41cm in the broadwater.

Wading the broadwater this week
A big day of fishing with lures

New moon is this coming Thursday, we have typical Christmas king tides, big highs in the morning then big run out. Ideal for fishing on top of shallow banks and along the edges of the channels, or further  up rivers for whiting and crabs. We will see some excellent fishing.

I’m just having three days off over Xmas then flat out fishing as often as the weather allows.
