GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint

16 July 2026

We had a fantastic run of weather and the lure fishing absolutely fired. Flathead were thick at times across the Gold Coast Broadwater shallows, smashing S Tackle Fish Tail soft plastics. There are plenty of 42 to 65cm fish around, with some quality models mixed in, making for some action packed sessions.

The arrow squid have finally started to come on now that the water is crystal clear and winter has really taken hold. Numbers are building and the average size has improved as well. If they go quiet on squid jigs, don’t give up. Ecogear ZX40 blades worked with a slow lift and drop through the 4 to 6 metre channels can be deadly. They also produce a huge mix of other species including flounder, tuskfish, bream and stacks of winter whiting, so there’s always plenty happening.

This strong southerly blow will stir things up for a day or two, but the good news is it isn’t expected to hang around. As soon as it settles, I expect the flathead and squid fishing to fire straight back up again.

I’m now fully booked until 5 August, then 11, 14 August are the next available dates after that. A huge thank you to everyone who has booked a trip. If you’re thinking about getting out on the water after then, I’d recommend locking in your preferred date soon as the remaining spots are filling quickly.

Fishing options in the next 6 weeks:

flathead on soft plastics, vibes in the channels for fish and squid, squid on jigs, whiting in Nerang river on yabbies and worms
