GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

18 July 2025

What a great week of fishing! Classic winter fun with heaps of flathead everywhere, good numbers of squid, nice size flounder, tarwhine, bream, tailor, and winter whiting. We’ve been doing well at Southport, Runaway Bay, Currigee, and Crab island.

The flathead have been so widespread from shallow to deep, and quality is improving with lots in the 45-60cm range. On the island flats the S Tackle 4 inch fish tail and Rattle shad plastics have been deadly.

Out in the 4-6 metre deep channels and broadwater reefs the Samaki vibelicious and bladelicious vibes, and Ecogear ZX40’s have been getting heaps of bites on quality flathead and arrow squid. Winter whiting and flounder are very aggressive on blade lures and fun to catch. They are also delicious to eat.

The arrow squid have been spreading out to all the usual areas I’ve been catching them for the last 8 winters. I’ve found it really pays to keep trying different coloured squid jigs every day to see what triggers them to attack.

We have some windy weather early this week but we’ll find some sheltered areas to target whiting and flathead. It’s been a very busy few weeks of charters for me with bookings 22 of the last 25 days, and still busy looking ahead with only nine days still available in August, then September always flat out.
