🎣 GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint

18 September 2026

We’ve had a real mix of weather lately, but when we’ve managed to get some nice days the fishing has been very good.

FLATHEAD

There are still plenty of decent school flathead around Crab Island and South Straddie, with fish responding well to a variety of lures. Bait fish have been very sporadic and moving a lot, which does affect the fishing. Cover lots of ground to find fish.

S Tackle Fish Tails have been producing plenty of fish, along with Ecogear ZX vibes, Daiwa Infeet metal vibes and Samaki Redic hardbodies. Get all my favourite lures and tackle from Sporty’s fishing, 32 Strathaird Rd, Bundall.

Flathead fishing is usually productive right through spring and into December, so there should still be plenty of good fishing ahead as the water continues to warm.

NERANG RIVER

The Nerang River has been fishing well with a good mixed bag on offer.

We’ve been seeing trevally, mulloway, grunter, decent sand whiting, bream and the odd flathead.

The sand whiting are starting to become more active, which is a great sign as we head towards the warmer months and the prime evening whiting season.

BROADWATER CHANNELS

There are still plenty of winter whiting around, along with a few nice flounder.

Metal vibes such as Ecogear ZX and Daiwa Infeet have been working well, while live yabbies are always a great option.

Some of the better areas have been the channels around Southport, Runaway Bay, Currigee and Ephraim Island.

CHARTER UPDATE

My charters are fully booked for roughly the next month, although I do have a couple of 3 hour trips available in early October.

I’ve also already started taking bookings for the upcoming Whiting Evening Charters.

If any other dates become available due to cancellations or changes, I’ll advertise them here on social media. This time of year onwards just gets even more busy so book ahead to avoid missing out.

πŸ‘‡ See below for details on chasing monster Gold Coast sand whiting this summer!

πŸŒ™πŸŽ£ WHITING EVENING CHARTERS

The Gold Coast Broadwater and Nerang River are famous for their exceptional sand whiting fishing during the warmer months.

Using light tackle and live worms, we target these hard-fighting fish during the evenings. Many whiting measure over 30 cm, with some reaching 40 cm or more.

Come and learn the techniques, enjoy a fun night on the water and hopefully take home a delicious fresh feed!

3 hour private charter, including live bait:

1 person β€” $400

2 people β€” $500

3 people β€” $600

4 people β€” $720

All charters are 100% private. I do not run shared charters.

Starting times vary between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm, depending on the tides, meeting at Isle of Capri.

Please bring an esky if you plan to take fish home, along with any drinks and snacks you would like.

These trips are also perfect for an after work fish and are a great way to enjoy a summer evening on the Gold Coast and it’s spectacular views.

Available dates will be regularly advertised on my Facebook page.
