THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

19 August 2023

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone I’m glad i managed to get my work in for my clients done early in the week. In august and at the time of writing the wind is howling in from the west north west. This is known as the Ekka winds which unfortunately coincide with the historical Brisbane Exhibition.

The thing i like about fishing the Tweed is that it’s a long winding river and you can find some protection from prevailing elements. The lower reaches of the river are still producing the best results and that is simply due to that best bait concentrations are holding there.

Look for the bait on your sounder that are holding close to the bottom in the 7 to 10 metre areas and there you will find success with soft plastics and of course my favourite lures Samaki and Ecogear vibes. Natural colour lures are working best unless there’s cloud cover. The fish caught this week were flatties, bream, whiting, flounder, school jew and tailor.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

I’ve been hearing from many reports this week that the local estuary fishing has not been on fire. That has certainly been my experience, and I’ve had to work extra hard and cover lots of ground to put customers onto fish.

Lack of bait in the broadwater, clear water, less than ideal tides are likely some reasons. The annual snot weed season has commenced, and will likely be around until October. In saying all of this there are still enough flathead around in both shallow and deep areas, as well as arrow squid. Best lures this week have been the new TT Switchprawn + blades (released to the public in September), Ecogear ZX40, and Zman 3 inch Minnowz.

Yesterday I did notice a bit more bird activity, some bait fish, and a few tailor busting up in the broadwater. Hopefully signs of more to come. Best areas this week have been Runaway Bay, North Crab, and North Currigee.

This week is looking like good weather, about time too as it’s been all over the place. I’ll be looking for more flathead, squid, winter whiting, and sand whiting on my charters.
