GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

2 October 2023

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone it was a big week of fishing for me on the Tweed and I was very surprised about how few boats were on the water especially being school holiday time.

One of the great things about the Tweed apart from some great fishing is general lack of boat and jet ski traffic. Once again this week produced some consistent results and we even managed to boat a few nice fish early on Thursday morning before we had to abort the trip before being caught in Thursday’s storm fronts which hit the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales. The best results this week especially on the flatties came from either casting or trolling the shallows. It appears that the flatties were waiting in the shallows to feed and this might be due to the unusual lack of bait that would normally be found on my sounder in the deep holes.

I still think that the river needs to receive a good drop of rain to stir it up a bit as it has been a long dry spell so far this year. The fish caught this week were flatties, bream, whiting, flounder and a couple of small giant trevally.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Another massive week on the flatties in the Gold Coast broadwater. We had days of 20-50 of these fish caught and released, on soft plastics and vibe lures.

I fished the flathead classic this week with my mate Warric after missing it last year. We worked hard to finish 4th out of 123 teams in the two angler division, and 17th overall out of 244 teams. We caught 86 flathead over the three days.

Apart from that there has still been some variety in the broadwater, including thousands of slimy mackerel, sand whiting, winter whiting, squire, squid, a few flounder, and the odd stray tailor.

Best lures have been Ecogear zx, Samaki Vibelicious new colours, Zman Slim Swimz, and Crush City imposters.

This week we move past the full moon, and some Northerly winds for a few days which are often light in the morning then 15 knots later inshore. Good tides for whiting and flathead in the shallows.

I have only a few dates left in October, next days available are 11, 18, 23 October.

Fishing options include flathead with soft plastics, soft vibes, blades, hardbodies,

wading the island flats for big whiting with yabbies, and lures for flathead and bream.
