THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

2 September 2023

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone the Tweed and surrounding towns saw some pretty dramatic little storm cells move in from the south west on wednesday afternoon.

The storms brought some lightning, small non damaging hail and a few showers but unfortunately not a lot of heavy rain. I say this because the river in my opinion needs a healthy dose of rain to roll it over a bit and reproduce a bit more life.

Luke and his family have just moved here from South Africa and enjoyed catching a heap of flatties

The area has not received any proper rain for around two and a half months now which is a long dry spell. The fishing however this week still produced a healthy amount of flatties, bream, tailor and whiting but by far the flatties dominated the catch rate. I found the bait holding areas in six to nine metres of water to be the most productive grounds with deep water jigging supplying the best results.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Well it’s spring now, and the flathead still aren’t around in mass numbers. I think this is because there has been a lack of bait fish, plus we are now switching to bigger day time tides this time of year which should get things moving around more.

Tom caught and released his first ever fish on a lure, a 65cm flathead

Simon caught his pb 61cm flathead on soft plastic

We also now need a bigger amount of rain to dirty the water up a bit. A major rain event looks unlikely this summer so we’ll have to rely on storms to supply some moisture. Yesterday however there was a lot of small whitebait coming through the seaway, followed by oceanic queenfish. Hopefully some larger schools of tailor appear soon too.

Some nice dusky flathead and tailor

We have still had some reasonable catches of flathead this week, with most fish measuring 40 to 60cm. Small lures are working best, my favourites have been Zman 3 inch Minnowz in Smelt and Opening Night colour, also TT Switchprawn vibes, Ecogear ZX40, and Pontoon 21 Awaruna plastics.

Broadwater mix

Sand whiting are flooding into the system and they are everywhere. We are near the end of squid season now.

We’re into the week after full moon now, best options drifting deeper channels around tide changes, and fishing plastics along the edges when the tide is running hard. Keep a look out for bait balls on the sounder and birds diving to find flathead.

Water is super clear on run in tides, look for any discoloured water too. North Crab, Sovereign bank, Browns inlet are worth a look. Tiny whitebait has started moving into the broadwater, hopefully this keeps happening to attract more flathead, use small and clear soft plastics to mimic the whitebait.

I’m fully booked this week, next available dates at the Gold Coast broadwater are 19 September, 3 October.
