GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

20 June 2025

Hi everyone, it’s been a great week of fishing locally with lots of variety on the bite during the neap tides. This coming week’s new moon period should be even better!

Everything’s a bit behind schedule because of the floods over summer but things are now starting to look very good. The water is clearing nicely and getting colder, Hinze Dam has finally stopped overflowing. Flathead are coming on more but not great size yet with a lot of school fish ranging from 35 to 50cm common. Best lures to target them are S Tackle paddle tail and fish tail soft plastics, Rapala Crush City Imposters, Samaki vibes, blades, and Redic hardbodies. Crab island, Currigee, Runaway Bay have been the pick of the spots.

Good to see the arrow squid coming on in numbers although still only medium size. Let’s hope the bigger ones appear this week, around new moon is usually excellent for them, and during run in tide and first half of run out in water 4-6 metres deep mostly.

In the deeper reefy main channels in the broadwater there are stacks of big sea bream, tarwhine, tailor, flounder, slatey, and heaps of beautiful winter whiting. Yabbies and Samaki blades have been working great in the deeper areas. Keep an eye out for birds diving, tailor busting up, and baitballs on the sounder then cast and spin for the tailor with 20-40 gram metal slugs.

Much the same this coming week, I’ll be targeting all of the above on my charters to get beautiful hauls of fresh winter seafood for my guests.
