THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

20 March 2022

Dad joke:

The walk from my house to the bar is 5 minutes. From the bar to my house is 35 minutes.

The difference is staggering.

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone the Tweed is slowly starting to clean up but it still has a bit to go before it returns to its potential.

Unfortunately some of the poor residents along the river are still battling to get their lives back to some form of reality so lets hope the sun keeps shining in order to help the massive clean that is still required in the area.

Once again this week I was busy on the water and utilized the run in tides through the lower reaches of the river and came up with some great results for my clients. The bream were going mad and were attacking every lure that hit the water and in some places so were the flatties. There  were some nice flatties as well that averaged around the 50 cm mark and we managed to catch and release another flattie like last week over the 70cm mark.

Derrick with a big female flattie ready for release
Phil got onto a bunch of flatties around the 50 cm mark

Mixed in with the catches were a few whiting and small but hard fighting GTs,

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

The water is suddenly starting to look a more healthy colour with the bigger run in tides. It’s nice to finally see some cleaner oceanic water pushing in, and the strong Southerly current offshore will help further.

Dave did very well to land this beautiful brassy trevally
Marker 54 mullet run plastics are great for flatties

Water temperatures should not get too hot from now on, which should enhance the flathead fishing and possibly bring on an early run of winter species. It has been 25 degrees in the broadwater, 26 up Nerang river.

I fished the broadwater today with yabbies and vibes, there was an abundance of sand whiting, winter whiting, tuskfish, flounder, and a few flathead.

Some nice fish from the broadwater

This week we are on the back of the full moon, I’ll be fishing the broadwater channels again and wading for sand whiting.

Best lures: Ecogear Isome worms in red xl size, Samaki vibes in Grey Ghost and Chartreuse uv squid, Marker 54 mullet run plastics in Texas black gold, and Ecogear ZX 40 in colours 414 & 440. Always smear some Sax scent on the lures every 10 minutes.

Tune in every Saturday morning 5-6am on 94.1 FM when I chat to Paul Burt and give fishing tips on his new radio show.
