GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

20 September 2025

I had charters every day this week and we scored some good flathead. The big girls are turning up for breeding season just as the water starts to warm. The flathead will feed aggressively in the next few months to condition themselves for spawning over the summer months.

My favourite lures on flatties cover what they mainly eat, bait fish and crustaceans. For bait fish lure profiles it’s hard to go past S Tackle 4 inch fish tails, rattle minnows, and Rapala Crush City The Jerk and Heavy Hitter soft plastics. MMD Pop Prawns, Rapala Crush City Imposters, Fishcraft Dr Prawn, and the new Zman Prawnz Elite range all do the job very nicely for prawn imitations.

When chasing flathead it pays to find bait, some days it’s easier said than done! One day there is little bait balls visible on the fish finder, the next day blank. Either way I keep moving often until we get bites. Casting at every likely looking spot from Wavebreak to Sovereign island.

This week we also caught whiting, flounder, tailor, and the usual bream and tarwhine. New moon is on Monday 22 September, the morning high tides get later as the week goes on. The water gets very clear on top of the tides, and it’s a good time to try for flathead and tailor on the shallow flats then off the edges on the run outs.

Whiting wading will be a great option in coming weeks, and it’s a thrilling way to fish on ultra light tackle in crystal clear, shallow water and catch big whiting, flathead, and bream. My next available dates for prime wading tides are 27-31 October.
