THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

21 May 2022

Dad joke:

What did our parents do to kill boredom before the internet?

I asked my 10 brothers and sisters, but they don’t know either.

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

Well Well Well everyone the rain just keeps coming this year making things a bit uncomfortable but the fish are there for those getting on the water.

I managed to put in a couple of days on the water this week fishing the lower reaches of the Tweed on the tun in tides.

Olly with a nice little school jew he caught on a zx 40 lure
There are plenty of nice quality flatties like this one in the Tweed as well

The fishing was a lot of fun with a heap of bream smashing every lure that hit the water. The other species caught were some nice quality flatties and some small school jew.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Most models suggest that La Niña will continue to weaken in the coming week and most likely break down in late autumn or early winter.

This is great news for many people including us and I do hope this happens sooner rather than later. We have had enough rain and sick of the sight of it. Let’s hope the rain and wind goes on holiday and gives way to calm and sunny days typical for winter in Queensland.

Damo was very happy to catch and release his first jack
We caught a few flatties on Pontoon 21 crackjack lures
A good haul of blue swimmers

One thing for sure is we will get amazing fishing over the next five or so months.

I ran a few charters this week, and we caught nice flathead and plenty of bream in Nerang river on lures and yabbies, while in the broadwater the fishing has been hit and miss but there are plenty of good size male blue swimmer crabs out there.

Definitely run in tides are working best for all species and locations, and near the seaway and main channel just North of there the place to be. The TSS rocky reef has plenty of bream holding there.

A fine morning
We found a new wreck while fishing with Phil & family

Best lures: Samaki vibes in Cleopatra Tiger, Grey Ghost, Ecogear soft plastic worms in red colour, Samaki slugs for tailor

As always yabbies have been catching plenty of fish, we even caught a mangrove jack on a yabby, with regular guest Damo catching his first ever red dog.

Damo’s jack and some nice flathead/ bream

This coming week we again see rain coming, let’s hope this is the last of it for a while. I’ll be getting out when I can to fish the broadwater and Nerang river. Tides are suitable for afternoon trips to catch the run in tides.

Tune in most Saturday mornings 5-6am on 94.1 FM when I chat to Paul Burt and give fishing tips on his new radio show.
