GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

21 September 2024

After a slow few weeks of flathead fishing they are coming on the bite a bit more in recent days. About time too as the flathead classic is on next week. At this stage it’s not looking like it’ll be a hot bite but who knows.

The best fishing has been from the seaway to the aldershots including the seaway walls, South straddie, and crab island. On the run in tides the water has been crystal clear and it pays to fish deeper and use smaller lures. On the run out it has been getting  very dirty with lots of snot weed and very tough fishing.

I noticed lots of bait fish and gar fish skipping over the surface in the last few days which is great to see. There are still lots of good quality whiting at council chambers in Nerang river.

This coming week we have neap tides, Northerly winds at first then a big South to South East wind change, plus run in tides through the day. Very tricky but there is always someone who cracks the code in the flathead classic. Some lures that will come in handy are trolled Samaki redic df 50mm, and plastics that have been working well are Rapala Crush City 3 inch heavy hitter, Fish Craft 3 inch Dr Prawn, Holt 3 and 4 inch prawns, Gulps, Ecogear Balt, and Zman elite prawnz.

A few reminders for the flattie classic: don’t forget some teaspoons of concrete for when the going gets touch, some tissues for when your team mates are slaying and you can’t get one fish, and plenty of band aids for when flathead spike you even when very careful 😡
