THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

23 January 2023

Dad joke:

I wonder what my parents did to fight boredom before the internet?

I asked my 18 brothers and sisters and they don’t know either.

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

Like most areas including the Gold Coast there has been some tough spells of fishing due to the biggest tides of the year. The key is sounding the deeper holes around tide changes to find the bait.

Ecogear ZX 40 and breamer vibes have been doing the damage catching jew, flathead, bream, and whiting.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

A mixed week with some good fishing on the flats before fishing got tougher with big tides pushing in. We’re still catching lots of fish and variety but size is down.

Best fishing spots have been Wavebreak island, Curlew island, little Crab island, and next to Clive’s superyacht.

Brothers Harry & Ollie with two nice jacks
Terry caught this epic 45cm whiting

Still great sport on light line using Ecogear ZX40’s and breamer vibes, we caught morwong, snapper, tuskfish, moses perch, flathead, flounder, bream, tarwine, winter whiting, sand whiting, tealeaf trevally, squid on the deeper reef areas to 12 metres.

With new moon and the biggest tides of the year it is a challenge to find fish. The run in tide is best, run out is very weedy and dirty north of the seaway and south to the spit. Bar crossings will be very dodgy on the big run out tides, especially with some swell around.

Ecogear breamer vibes are deadly
Fresh catch from the broadwater

Also take care not to get grounded on shallow areas after the big high tides run out, and there are many ignorant big boats and superyachts going too fast in the main channels and causing massive wash. Beware if you’re in a kayak or small tinny, these selfish arseholes have no regard for others safety. Something will have to be done about them soon, they need to slow down.

I’ll be fishing the morning high tides on all the broadwater island edges and flats with plastics, and vibes out deeper. Then moving back up Nerang river middle reaches for run out. The evening tides are good for mangrove jacks up river, and big sand whiting in the western channel behind wavebreak island.
