GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

24 December 2024

After a family holiday and some great fishing and adventures for a week up at Agnes Water/ 1770 we returned home to more rain. It certainly didn’t harm the fishing though which is firing up big time.

Nerang river is still quite muddy from the rain and Hinze dam overflow, and not fishing to it’s potential yet. It will improve in coming weeks if we don’t get more heavy rain. There has still been some nice catches of whiting, spotted grunter, bull sharks, bream, trevally, mulloway, and tarwhine in the middle to lower section of Nerang river. Small bull sharks are great eating, just remember to cut their tail off and fully bleed them after capture. It’s a very healthy system we have here on the Gold Coast that we are fortunate to have. Plenty of jetski flogs out there this time but there are still plenty of quieter areas to escape the crowd like 6 knot zones, canals, the Western channel in Southport, the sand banks and channels, North Currigee.

The Southern broadwater is really starting to look good, and the fishing suddenly turning on big time. Expect lots of big whiting in the shallows and deeper to six metres, sand crabs, a few flathead, and an array of other species. Not many fish are better to eat than sand whiting though, I’ll be chasing them heaps through summer, and they’re awesome fun on light tackle with yabbies and worms the best bait. Book in your charter date soon as the summer months always fill fast!
