GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

by Clint

24 January 2026

The Australia Day long weekend is always the busiest time of year on the local waterways. Once it passes, things thankfully quieten down and the Broadwater becomes far more enjoyable to fish.

Fishing wise, the past week has again produced solid numbers of sand whiting around Southport, Corfield Island, Curlew Island, and Crab Island. Yabbies and beach worms have been the standout baits, fished in one to two metres of water. Going light is key to getting consistent bites, soft tipped light rods, 6–8 lb line, a running size 2 sinker, about a metre of fluorocarbon leader, and a size 2 or 4 fine gauge hook. If you need to gear up, drop into Sporty’s Fishing at Bundall and they’ll sort you out properly.

The morning low tides this coming week are ideal for pumping yabbies, with good numbers on the banks at Curlew and Wavebreak Islands. It’s well worth fishing just off the edges of these yabby banks for whiting, flathead, bream, and tarwhine. As the day goes on, try moving slightly deeper, around the two metre mark where there are also good schools of winter whiting mixed in with the sand whiting.

Blue swimmer crabs are around the Broadwater but numbers are patchy at best. There have also been a few squid, flathead, small snapper, and flounder caught for those mixing things up.

I now have Saturday 31 January available due to a cancellation.

Have a great Australia Day, stay safe on the water, and tight lines. ðŸ‡¦ðŸ‡ºðŸŽ£
