GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

26 June 2025

The bigger squid arrived this week, although not huge numbers yet. The massive king tides at night around new moon probably aren’t helping, stirring up the water clarity too much. The last half of run in tide and first two hours of run out have been best for squid at Southport, Bayview, Runaway Bay, and Currigee.

There has been massive amounts of winter whiting. They don’t get as big as sand whiting but they are fun to catch, very aggressive lure takers, and great to eat. Using blades lures in the deeper sand and reef channels this time of year is working well for flathead, flounder, winter whiting, squid, bream, tarwhine, tuskfish. Nerang river has a few sand whiting and flathead biting.

Getting the drift right plays a big part in catching lots of fish and squid, when you wind comes up strong it pays to move to wherever it’s more sheltered. It looks like a coastal low will form out from Brisbane and move South on Monday, it’ll mean a few days of strong wind and rain. Hopefully it moves away quickly so we can continue to enjoy great winter fishing.
