TWEED RIVER by Smithy

Gday everyone and Merry Xmas to you and your familys.

I hope that Santa put some fishing gear under the tree for you so you can enjoy some quality time roaming our local waterways in search of a few fish.  Once again the best action is coming from fishing the shallow parts of the rivers using mmd splash prawns on the surface.

The most common species we are getting are whiting then bream followed by the odd flathead rising from the bottom to engulf the lures. It is important to note some of the good areas for surface fishing can be found by walking along and casting the shallow areas of our local rivers and creeks which is a fun activity for a few hours while you are enjoying the holiday break.

We have caught a few mangrove jacks trolling with deep diving lures but the best results on the jacks still seem to be coming from fishing a combination of live and fresh cut baits at night.

There are still some decent flathead around

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

A few days off over Christmas and we are back in action from now onwards through peak season.

I ran a jack charter before the break, Tom caught his first river jack charter, and on a couple of day trips in Nerang river and the Gold Coast broadwater we boated a few flathead, sand whiting, winter whiting, squid, tuskfish, flounder and squire. Ecogear ZX40 blades coated in Sax scent and yabbies proved best for tempting the fish.

There wasn’t as much rain as we hoped this week but anything is better than nothing. Hopefully it was enough to slightly stir up the rivers. We have some big morning tides after the new moon, and smaller tides at night. The jacks are getting hungrier and are hitting live baits such as mullet, whiting, and silver biddies more aggressively.

I love these tides for night jack fishing and if it coincides with a rising barometer and hot weather we usually get some red devil action. The big morning tides are tricky to take advantage of but focus your fishing close to the tide changes when fishing North of the seaway, and when it’s running hard fish South of the seaway.

Fish deeper on the run in tides too when the water is clearer.

We are booked out until at least 9 January now so get in quick for the rest of the month.

Cheers and see you on the water!
