THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

25 September 2020

*Afl legend Luke Hodge fishes with us

*Smithy’s trip out West

*Nice mix of fish in the broadwater

Dad joke:

My missus threw some Omega 3 capsules at me today.

It’s okay though, I only have super fish oil injuries.

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

G’day everyone as you know I am usually on the tweed river and sometimes the richmond and clarence rivers to the south but for the past week I headed west to Glenlyon Dam to do a bit of guiding.

The yellowbelly were frothing on zx 40s

Glenlyon dam as the crow flies is roughly 90 klms out of stanthorpe and 90 clicks east of texas and is well stocked with our iconic native species the yellowbelly and mighty murray cod. A quick call to the caretakers of the dams tourism park Brian and Debbie Dare who are passionate lure fishos for some tips on our preparation came with a surprising result in them telling me to bring out some ecogear zx40 vibes.

This was not what I expected but when you get advice from the Dares you take it as I am a salty dog not a fresh water specialist. The end result was some great cod and yellowbelly on the zx40s and my own lures the Yobbos that I carved over 30 years ago.

Bloody good trip and get a copy of next months Bush n Beach magazine to learn more about this great adventure. As from next thursday the border bubble is going to be expanded which is great news as I will be able to do more trips on the tweed and the start of my surface fishing trips.

GOLD COAST RIVERS by Clinto

Today I was lucky to fish with afl legend Luke Hodge and his son Cooper. Luke won four afl premierships with Hawthorn and was club captain. What a champion and tough competitor! I asked him what it’s like to win one flag let alone four. He said incredible but it all goes so fast.

AFL legend Luke Hodge and his son Cooper came fishing with Clint in the broadwater
Tasty winter whiting

We caught some tuskfish, flathead, and whiting around Crab island. Enjoy your holiday in Noosa Hodgey and a big thanks to New Age Caravans for putting this day together.

On other days this week we fished similar areas while the tide was running and caught up to 100 fish per day on Ecogear blades, Pro Lure blades, Samaki soft vibes, and yabbies, beach worms. We did a couple of nights too in the Nerang river catching some nice sand whiting on worms and yabbies.

The day’s broadwater catch, we caught over 100 fish in 6 hours

This coming week is leading up to full moon on Friday, which will fire up the pelagics. The day time tides are a good size to target the broadwater channels too.

Remember to use 6-10 lb fluorocarbon leader to get more bites. The rivers now need a big flush of rain to rejuvenate them, and are best fished at night until then.

*This is just a % prediction. There are many factors when it comes to fishing and fish are unpredictable at times, there are no exact guarantees. We include this just for fun and see how it plays out every week.
