GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

We had some tough days in the broadwater chasing flathead this past week. Small bait were hard to find, and the flathead were scattered over large areas.
Trolling the new Samaki 40mm Redic divers helped find some fish, 1.5 knots is a good trolling speed and it is essential to constantly watch the rod tips to ensure the lures are swimming cleanly. If the hooks catch any weed give to the rods a few rips to clear the lures. If that doesn’t work bring the lure in to clean every bit of weed off as there is a fair bit of snotweed around. It pays to keep changing lure colours to see what gets the hits.
Yabbies will work very well this week as they are easily pumped in the mornings, and the fish will see a lot of lures with the flathead classic on and people prefishing for it. I’ll be going after whiting as well as flathead and others this coming week. There has been huge schools of bigger baitfish including pillies, yakka, and slimies pushing into the broadwater and the seaway.
