GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

30 May 2025

Not a lot to report this week with some very inconsistent fishing. It can’t always be good and this was one of those slow weeks and we only caught 10-20 fish a day and not much size about them.

It will improve, it always does. The squid are moving into the broadwater much later than the last seven years, because of ongoing rain. They have started and we’ve been catching a few in the usual channels. Whiting have been very quiet which surprises me, again this never lasts for long. They are a prolific and resilient species, it’s just a matter of finding where the schools are feeding.

Flathead are turning on and typically for this time of years there are a lot of males in the 30-45cm size range. They are moving very quickly as the bait has been constantly on the move and the fish follow. Hinze dam is still overflowing but only just, sitting at 100.6% at the time of writing. We could potentially get a fair bit of rain over the next four days which could raise the level a little bit.

Best lures this week have been Samaki bladelicious, S tackle shads and soft plastics, and MMD pop prawns. The fish have been finicky so lighter jigheads and slower jigging has helped get the hook ups. It is essential to experiment with different colour lures to find what works. We have had some massive tides at night around the new moon, this week they get smaller. Nice size morning run outs for bank edge flathead fishing then easy run ins for deeper channels for flathead, flounder, squid, tuskfish, and winter whiting in the broadwater.
