THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

31 January 2025

GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

We have had a week of great weather here on the Gold Coast, and the holiday crowds are going home. The waterways are a lot more peaceful and pleasant for fishing, although the fishing has tapered off on the new moon.

This week we caught good size sand whiting and flounder, trevally, bream, and tarwhine. North currigee has been fairly good as well as Southport and Benowa. The big tides the past few days have cleaned up the river a lot, which will make night fishing a good option until the next big wet arrives. There are also huge numbers of winter whiting in the Southport channels, and are very easily caught and great fun using zx lures or beach worms.

There is a lot of variety on the broadwater reefs this time of year between the seaway and Runaway bay, but the fish are of micro size. It’s great to see a lot less ignorant and oblivious flogs on the water. In January a large amount of times we’d be spotlocked near the waters edge and they’d pass through the narrow gap between us and the bank when they had the whole wide river to pass, quite astonishing. It was great to see MSQ officers on jetskis catching loads of them doing the wrong things.

Anyway the busiest time of the year is over aka silly season and we look forward to catching lots of fish in coming weeks and months. Just remember to know and adhere to what the bag and size limits of each fish are. Especially jacks which are now extinct in the seaway.

Charter options in coming weeks: whiting fishing in the Nerang river and broadwater, wading for big whiting, using vibe lures in the broadwater, and more..

Bundled up the remaining lures in the online store into mystery packs, full of value! I’m packing as much great quality stuff into each pack as the postage bags fit. Be real quick…
