GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

6 September 2025

Another big week of fishing and some great weather, the Gold Coast broadwater is fishing well with lots of school flathead on the bite. The water temperature is sitting around 20 degrees, and it’s just a matter of finding where the bait fish are.

As always the squid will thin out this month as the water warms, it was a late start to the season but it eventually ramped up nicely. Now we look to making the most of flathead season then whiting. Over the next few months the broadwater and rivers see a big influx of quality sand whiting from 30cm to over 40cm in size.

The two best ways to target monster whiting are fishing up the rivers with worms, and fishing the very shallow banks in the broadwater with yabbies.

This coming week there are quite big morning run out tides which are ideal for flathead fishing. They love waiting in ambush mode for bait as flats drain, using soft plastic, vibe, and hardbody lures all work well. Getting the right colour lure that triggers bites is key, and can be different every day. The biggest mistake many people make when chasing flathead is working the lure way too fast.
