GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

8 October 2024

A busy few weeks for me with lots of charters then a family camping trip at South Currigee on South Stradbroke island over the long weekend.

When we’ve had windy days we’ve been finding plenty of shelter in Nerang river and catching good quality whiting, grunter, tarwhine, and bream. On the calmer mornings the broadwater has been producing flathead, tailor, whiting, small snapper, and even more bream. There is a lot of snot weed around buy it will disappear soon.

We had an amazing time at Currigee where you can camp right near the water and have your own camp fire. The weather was awesome after yet another blunder forecast by BOM which predicted strong Northerly winds which did not happen. I went for a morning fish in the surf which is just a 600 metre walk across the island. We caught lots of flathead, whiting, and bream, just keeping a few for dinner.

The wildlife really turned it on over the weekend and we saw wallabies, dolphins, owls, a green tree snake, and rescued a swan at crab island that had a fish hook in it’s neck and a length of line wrapped around it’s body. We dropped it at Seaworld where it will be nursed back to perfect health then released back into the wild. Please remember to never leave discarded fishing tackle at the water’s edge. On the way back to camp from Seaworld we saw a pod of whales and a pod of dolphins right near the seaway!

I’m mostly fully booked over the next two weeks with just the odd day available. Some great charter options coming up including walking the flats for monster whiting, chasing flathead on the sand island shallows with various lures, vibing the deeper areas for a big variety of fish, fishing the river for big whiting, trevally, grunter, and crabbing the broadwater. Good times ahead and any rain will fire everything right up!
