GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clint

9 January 2026

There were some of the biggest tides of the year around full moon but the fishing was still very good, particularly for quality sand whiting up to 40cm. On top of the yabby banks at Crab island was the best place to fish, and there is lots of small baitfish.

Some days there has been school size flathead in the 40 to 50cm range on the chew, and big bream, tarwhine, and tailor.

This coming week we enter the neap tide phase, with much smaller run in tides then later in the week bigger morning high tides again. Again whiting will be plentiful on the run in tides on top of the banks and off the adjacent edges on the run outs. Further up Nerang river has been very slow for whiting unless you go at night around the chambers and fish the run out tides. I had a look around the canals yesterday and we caught some big tarwhine and bream.

The rest of January is still quite busy on the waterways, as the day goes on it works well to fish the quieter areas and islands to avoid the noise and useless jetski flogs.

Charters are now fully booked for January, if there are any changes I’ll advertise them on the socials.
