1 August 2025 fishing report

GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

1 August 2025

The arrow squid have really come on this week and there are some bigger ones too, although nowhere near as big as previous seasons in the last eight years.  The main Southport channel from Seaworld to Marina mirage in six metres depth has been the best area this week. The water is clear enough now to catch them most of the time but run in is still best. Shimano flashboost and Daiwa Amorous joint jigs are working nicely, as are the Yamashita ones in natural colours.

The flatties have been on the bite at Crab island and along the Southern end of South Straddie in the mornings especially, feeding on whitebait schools. Where there is birds diving on the bait and tailor busting up on the surface, there is usually flathead not far away underneath. Casting S Tackle 2.5 and 4 inch fish tail soft plastics in whitebait and fluoro pearl colours, or trolling Samaki 50mm Redic hardbodies in shallow water from one to three metres deep in sandy areas works well.

There has also been lots of flounder in the shallows and deeper channels, they and flathead will greedily grab soft plastics and vibe lures such as Ecogear ZX’s, and Samaki Bladelicious. You can buy all the above lures and other great tackle from Sporty’s fishing, 32 Strathaird Road, Bundall.

August is looking very busy on my charters and nearly booked out, just three days still available, next available dates from now are 25th, 28th, 29th August. Then September is always busy every year.

Some good charter options in August/ September:

•Arrow squid on jig and vibes.

•Using blades and vibes in the channels for winter whiting, flounder, flathead, bream, tarwhine, tailor, and lots more variety.

•Fishing the shallow sand flats and canals for dusky flathead with soft plastics, My Lure Box glides and hardbody lures.

•River fishing for big sand whiting with live worms, and wading the flats for big whiting (September to March)

•Jewfish and flathead with vibes in the deeper river holes.
