GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

21 July 2024

Chilly weather this week, but thankfully it never lasts long here on the Gold Coast. The squid and tailor have been revelling in these conditions with good size arrow squid being caught in the broadwater along South Straddie, Runaway Bay, and Southport in the deeper channels. The tailor have been firing along the surf beaches and in the broadwater with some good size ones biting on pillies rigged on gang hooks, and Samaki Torpedo V2 and Vortex Iron metals.

Flathead have been slow to start in the cold mornings but start to feed as the days warm up, trolling Samaki Redic 50mm df works consistently well, as does casting and hopping Fish Craft Dr. Prawn, Zman 3 inch minnowz in Disco Cisco colour, and Rapala Crush City imposter in yabby colour. In the deeper channels jigging Ecogear ZX’s and TT Switchprawns are catching lots of variety including squid, flathead, flounder, winter whiting, bream, tarwhine, and tuskfish.

There has still been some ok size sand whiting chewing in Nerang river when the tides are bugger and dredgers are working, with fish around the 30cm mark falling for beach worms.

Full moon is today Sunday 21 July. This week is looking like better weather with lighter wind and milder morning temperatures.
