GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

23 August 2025

Apart from the two days of rain we fished every day the rest of the week and caught lots of variety including flathead, tailor, squid, flounder, whiting, and the usual bream, tarwhine. Yesterday the flathead were a bit shy when the water was glassed out but Jeffrey still got a nice feed of flatties, winter whiting, and squid on his solo charter.

We had about 70 mm of rain in the Nerang river catchment which barely changed the water colour, it’s just slightly more dirty on the run out tides which will only help the fishing. This time of year it’s hard to decide what to chase each day because there is so much variety on offer.

There are still heaps of arrow squid in the main channels and a lot of mixed sizes from small to big. We have days where we could easily catch 50 or 60 but prefer to move on to catching fish as well and not be one trick ponies.

In the shallows around Crab islands and South Straddie there has been loads of school size flathead mostly in the 40-50cm range. Casting S Tackle 4 inch fish tail plastics in whitebait and fluoro pearl colours is working very well, and the new Nomad Spectre Minnow 3.25 inch in Pink Shiner colour smashed them as well.

Out in the deeper 4-6 metre channels using Ecogear ZX40 and Samaki bladelicious and vibelicious is accounting for lots of stuff including squid, flathead, flounder, and good size winter whiting which are so much fun to catch on lures and great eating.

This coming week looks up and down winds but still fishable. Early morning low tides then run in are the feature this week after new moon today. Windy days I’ll look for big whiting in Nerang river, good weather days chase flathead and squid in the broadwater.

I have just Thursday available, the weather and tides are looking great! Grab it while you can.
