GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT by Clinto

24 August 2024

Good to have some warmer weather and some ok fishing after the rain but certainly not red hot fishing for flathead. They have been more aggressive in the last few days though, which is to be expected this time when they feed up to condition themselves for their summer spawning season.

They have been quite shy and hard to tempt, the new Rapala  Crush City heavy hitter 3 inch shads have been the most successful lures in tempting the lazy lizards around Crab island. Apart that there are still arrow squid in the broadwater, and sand whiting up Nerang river, plenty of bream everywhere, and a few tailor.

The bigger whitebait has arrived in the broadwater with the water temperature hanging around 20 degrees. Let’s hope the bait stays, the fishing will be excellent then in coming weeks. Best fishing areas has been Crab island, Runaway bay, and Sovereign bank.

This coming week there are nice size tides to suit lots of fishing types, with the morning lows getting later. The last three hours of run out, first three hours of run in are a great period to chase flathead using 3 inch Rapala crush city heavy hitter plastics, Zman 3 inch minnowz, and try My Lure Box soft glide to tempt the bigger girls.

Mostly sunny and warm this week which is great for fishing but there’ll be some North/ North Westerly winds which could bring on the snot weed. Hopefully not!
