THIS WEEK’S GOLD COAST AND TWEED ESTUARY FISHING REPORT AND NEWS

31 July 2020

*Heavy rain at Tweed muddies river

*Gold Coast rivers muddy too, broadwater the place to fish

TWEED RIVER by Smithy

This week’s charters were postponed due to the heavy rain. Next week the river should start to fish very well for flathead, big bream.

The Gold Coast also received some good rain last weekend, with totals around 180mm recorded at Carrara, Bundall and South Stradbroke.

I fished a few days after the rain in the broadwater, conditions have been tricky with Southerly winds, water temps, and air pressure all up and down. The good news is that rain and wind has cleared much of the snot weed.

The fishing hasn’t been great but there is a stack of big bream around the seaway and Southport main channel markers, gorging themselves to be in prime condition for their full moon spawning next Tuesday. Otherwise there has been scattered winter whiting, flathead, tuskies, flounder, tarwine, school mackerel.

Just enough for dinner

Most successful lures have been Ecogear ZX40 in colour 440 and 414, Ecogear ZX43 in colour 404, Samaki Vibelicious forktail 70mm in motor oil orange colours.

The water clarity will vary after the rain. Try natural colours on run in tides, more flashy and solid colours on run out.

The mackerel have been hanging around

Next week we have some lovely weather to look forward to, and with a favourable almanac the scene is set for some good fishing in the Gold Coast broadwater. Yabbies will work very well in the river for whiting, and in the broadwater for a big variety. The arrow squid will hopefully return in numbers too with calmer and clearer water.

*This is just a prediction. There are many factors when it comes to fishing and fish are unpredictable at times, there are no exact guarantees. We include this just for fun and see how it plays out every week.
