GOLD COAST ESTUARY FISHING REPORT

by Clint

5 December 2025

I’ve been doing a lot of whiting fishing lately, either wading the shallows with ultra-light tackle or fishing from the boat in the southern Broadwater. The bigger whiting have been sitting slightly deeper off the bank edges for some reason, so it’s been worth focusing on those drop offs instead of the skinny water.

With the silly season approaching, it’s prime time to fish the Gold Coast Broadwater flats. Crab Island, Carters Bank, Wavebreak Island, and Curlew Island are all holding good numbers of sand whiting, flathead, bream, and a range of other estuary species. These areas come alive in December.

Even though the daytime water temperature rises, we still get those cooler ocean pushes with the big king tides typical of December. Flathead love that cooler water, and with the amount of small baitfish around at the moment, the Broadwater is full of activity and feeding predators.

We’ve got huge morning tides this week with the full moon on today Friday, some of the biggest of the year. My favourite approach during big run periods is fishing the run out tide at Southport: big run = big fun, it rings true every time.

Tip for yabby users: Pump your yabbies the afternoon before. They’ll keep perfectly overnight in an esky with just enough water to cover their backs and a frozen bottle to keep things cool.

I have a couple of days become available next week after a change of plans, so if you want to secure a pre Christmas session, SMS 0432 990 302. After that, the next available dates are in January.

🎄 Sporty’s Fishing at Bundall is fully stocked for Christmas! great tackle, great service, and everything you need for summer fishing.
